May 2, 2023, Camino, Ca. — Yesterday CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit announced that effective Monday, May 1, residential burn permits will be required. Residents can still burn as long as they obtain a residential burn permit. Permits are free and allow for the burning of dry landscape vegetation (not household trash) that originates from the landowner’s property. Burning is only allowed under the conditions presented on the permit and on days determined to be a burn day by El Dorado County Air Pollution Control District. Permits are valid May 1 thru April 30 — so if you haven't applied for a new one since yesterday, you will need to apply for a new permit if you need to burn. To obtain a residential burn permit, simply:

1. Go online to https://burnpermit.fire.ca.gov/
2. Click on "Apply for a Burn Permit".
3. Select "Residential Burn Permit".
4. Read the information and watch a short video.
5. Submit your application.
6. Retrieve your permit from your email. 

When burning:

1. Have your Residential Burn Permit accessible to you. Print the permit or save a copy to an electronic device that you can keep with you.
2. Before burning, check to see if it is a burn day:
   1. Online at El Dorado County Air Quality Management District, AQMD Facebook, or AQMD Twitter,
   2. Or by telephone: Western El Dorado County (530) 621-5897 or (866) 621-5897
3. Always stay in attendance of your burn pile. 
4. Apply water to the ashes and stir when you are done burning. Many fires have started because of hot embers being kicked up by wind even after burn piles are "out".
